Documents Required to Study in Belarus
A complete, ordered list of every document you need — and how to prepare and attest it correctly the first time.
Why should you prepare documents early?
Document preparation is the stage where most students stumble — not because it's hard, but because each document goes through a chain of steps (attestation, translation, notarization) that takes time if left to the last minute. Starting early means faster admission and a guaranteed seat.
The essential required documents
These are the documents no applicant to any Belarusian university can do without:
- A valid passport for no less than two years.
- High school certificate (or equivalent) with the transcript.
- Birth certificate.
- Medical examination and HIV test.
- Personal photos with a white background (size 3×4).
- A brief CV (for some universities).
- For postgraduates: bachelor's degree and its transcript.
Attestation and apostille: the most important step
Your certificates are not accepted in Belarus until officially attested. The certificate usually passes through a chain: Ministry of Education → Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your country → the Belarusian embassy (or apostille in countries party to the Hague Convention).
Certified translation
All documents must be translated into Russian by a certified translator, then the translation notarized. An uncertified translation is rejected outright.
We always recommend doing the translation after final attestation, so that the attestation stamps are also translated within the document.
Medical examination and HIV test
Belarus requires a comprehensive medical examination proving you are free of infectious diseases, plus an HIV test. Part of it is done in your country before travel, and it is re-verified on arrival as part of the residence procedures.
The ideal preparation timeline
- 4 months before: obtain certificates and start attestation.
- 3 months before: certified translation and notarization.
- 2 months before: apply to the university and receive the admission letter.
- 1 month before: receive the official invitation and start the visa process.
- On arrival: medical exam and residence registration.
This timeline is flexible, but sticking to it spares you last-minute pressure and secures your seat at the university you want.
